What is Psychiatry?

Psychiatry is a branch of medicine specializing in mental illness.  Psychiatrists work from medical model and are medical specialists (doctors).  Assessment of mental disorders includes brain function; developmental history; past and present issues which may contribute to the current illness or problems for the patient is seeking help.  Psychiatrists often use medication in treatment to relieve symptoms; and the Psychiatrists at TASSC also use psychotherapy to provide a holistic approach to improving mental wellbeing. TASSC Psychiatrists are experienced in all aspects of General Psychiatry and also specialize in specific areas of Psychiatry; these include trauma, psychoses; addiction; and mood disorders.
